Our brains like to do as much as possible on “auto-pilot”. This leaves more time and energy to adapt to the ever-changing environment around us. The majority of our beliefs, habits, thoughts, and behaviours were established long ago. These tramlines are reinforced on a regular basis – just like crossing our arms. So, how do we change our habits? How do we get out the “rut” that we’ve built for ourselves?
Do we take the easy way or the hard way?
Imagine an iceberg. 10% of it floating above the water with a whopping 90% sub-merged beneath the waterline. The 10% equates to the conscious mind with the 90% representing the behemoth of the subconscious, quietly going about its business, completely hidden from view. How can we expect our minds, habits or beliefs to change through using just the surface 10%.
Over the past 12 years I’ve seen many clients, all of them wanting to make positive, healthy changes and to experience life differently. Some may accomplish the desired changes. However, there are those that, no matter how many times they try, they seem to be “in their own way” or not able to “make that last step,” or commit fully to a programme.
I have spent a decade supporting peoples’ bodies and physical well-being but came to recognise that there was much more to be done. With the mental aspect of the mind/body connection not being addressed what then? I wanted to support people to make those changes.
Four hundred hours of clinical hypnotherapy training later and I feel that I’ve found a way to support my clients. Health never operates in isolation. Herbs and supplements may well support a woman’s menopausal transition, but they are never going to touch her feelings when she finds herself invisible in society. A dieter who self-sabotages may stop reaching for the cake by engaging with a psychological aversion technique. A client who feels that they are too busy to prepare and cook from scratch may well benefit from altering their perception of time.
Hypnotherapy is a fantastic tool to really live your best life. If what you desire involves the mind (and I’m willing to bet that it does) it can be addressed through the power of the subconscious mind. I’m thrilled that I’ve spent the time and effort to learn this valuable skill, one that has as many applications as there are supplements.
